In baseball it is critical for older players to know how to effectively steal a base. Base stealing keeps the batting team out of double plays, helps advance runners to scoring position, and puts pressure on the defense.

First of all, in order to learn to steal effectively, players and coaches should first closely watch the pitcher to find the pitcher's tendencies. Pitcher's typically have a routine they follow before and after each pitch, so be sure both players and coach's watch the pitcher to find these tendencies. Keeping a close eye on the pitcher will help player's and coach's know when the right time is to steal a base.

Once you have picked up some of the pitcher's queues, quirks and routines, it's time to steal.

Start off by making sure the player gets a good leadoff from the back side of the bag. When the time is right and the pitcher winds up to throw the pitch, the baserunner (base stealing player) should cross over with their left foot and drive off the bag with the right foot. The baserunner should stay low and explode off the bag for the first 5 steps. After the 4th or 5th step, the stealing baserunner should look in at the batter to see whether the ball is hit or not. If the ball is hit, the base stealer should quickly react to the hit ball. If the ball is not hit, the baserunner should continue their full out sprint to steal the base. As the player reaches the base they are stealing the baserunner should ALWAYS SLIDE using proper sliding techniques.

It does take some practice to steal bases, so make sure you are properly training your players to get a quick low start off the bag and practice on stealing bases.
